Mercedes brought the SL back to what it was always meant to be — a fast, comfortable two-seat roadster rather than a track car with the roof cut off. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo delivers its power smoothly, the fabric roof folds at speeds up to 60 km/h, and the rear-axle steering makes a large car feel far smaller through the tight turns above Istán.
On the Costa del Sol the case for it is simple. The N-340 coastal road between Marbella and Estepona is thirty kilometres of sea views taken at a pace that suits an open car, and the SL is quiet enough with the roof up to make the motorway run back from Málaga genuinely restful. Few convertibles manage both ends of that range.
Two seats is the trade-off worth understanding before booking. There is proper luggage space for a couple's weekend, but no back seat — for four people travelling together the C 63 Cabrio or the Ferrari California make more sense. For two, the SL is the better car by a clear margin.
