McLaren built the Artura around a new carbon monocoque and a smaller, lighter V6 rather than the V8 the brand is known for. The electric motor fills in below 3,000 rpm, which removes the turbo lag that used to define these cars, and adds a genuinely useful trick: the Artura will run on electric power alone for short distances.
On the Costa del Sol that is more than a novelty. Leaving a villa in Nueva Andalucía at seven in the morning, or moving through Puerto Banús late at night, the car can do it without waking anyone. Then the V6 wakes up and it accelerates hard enough to make the exercise entirely academic.
It shares the top of the fleet with the Ferrari Portofino at €2,000 a day, and the two are opposites. The Portofino is an open grand tourer for four; the Artura a closed, carbon-tubbed two-seater built for driving. Both are booked well in advance in July and August.
